So you’ve got positive feedback down and you’re ready to incorporate reinforcement, right? Well we’ve actually talked about it before… The main idea is to continue repeating patterns. What I mean by that is, say your working on short vowel ‘a’ words—once your child gets some main rhyming words down such as cat, bat, mat, rat, hat, pat, sat, etc. it’s time to branch out into non-rhyming words such as map, man, ram, lab, etc.
What you’ll notice is by anchoring skills on basic level before you move on to more advanced skills, your kids will gain a momentum which will lead to them gaining, you guessed it, more confidence!
Once your child masters short vowel ‘a’ words, move on to short vowel e’, ‘i’, ‘o’, and ‘u’ words. Follow those up with long vowel words in the same order. Diphthongs, words in the family of “er”-s (ir, or, ur, ear), and words containing ‘th’, ‘wh’, ‘sh’, and ‘ch’ should follow. I think you get the idea ;) Work in groups, build skills, and build confidence at the same time!
